A semen analysis is a simple but important test used to assess male fertility. Because male factors contribute to fertility challenges in up to 40–50% of cases, assessing sperm health is a routine and essential part of a comprehensive fertility work-up.

This test provides valuable information about sperm count, movement and shape, helping your specialist understand whether male factors may be contributing and guiding the next steps in your care.

 

What Does a Semen Analysis Measure?

A standard semen analysis assesses:

• Sperm count (concentration)
• Motility (how well sperm move)
• Morphology (sperm shape)
• Semen volume and other important markers

The results help us determine whether further investigation, lifestyle optimisation or fertility treatment may be recommended.

Your Semen Analysis Options at Flinders Fertility

We offer two pathways for semen analysis — a bulk-billed option through SA Pathology and a private at-home option through Sapyen (from $149).

Both provide clinically useful information. The right choice depends on your preferences and circumstances.

1.Bulk-Billed Semen Analysis – SA Pathology

We can provide a referral for bulk-billed semen analysis through SA Pathology. You collect the sample at home and then attend a designated SA Pathology collection centre at a pre-booked time to drop it off for urgent processing. This is a reliable, no-cost option (if you have a Medicare card) for standard semen analysis and is suitable for most patients undergoing initial fertility assessment.

Our team receives the results directly and will review them with you during your consultation.

2. At-Home Postal Testing – Sapyen (from $149)

For those who prefer greater flexibility or privacy, we also offer at-home semen testing through Sapyen, with testing options starting from $149.

With this option:

• A kit is delivered to your home
• You collect the sample at home
• The sample is posted directly to the laboratory in specialised packaging
• No attendance at a collection centre is required

This can be particularly helpful for men who are unable to attend a pathology centre within the required timeframe or who prefer a fully private option.

Sapyen Advanced Testing Options

In addition to standard semen analysis, Sapyen also offers advanced testing such as sperm DNA fragmentation analysis (additional cost applies).

DNA fragmentation testing assesses the genetic integrity of sperm which is something not measured in a routine semen analysis. In some situations, this may provide further insight, particularly in cases of unexplained infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss or previous unsuccessful fertility treatment.
