Medicare Safety Nets

Medicare Safety Nets provide families and singles with an additional rebate for out-of-hospital Medicare services, once annual thresholds are reached.

Please go to the Medicare Australia web site for detailed information on the Medicare Safety Net including:

  1. How the Medicare Safety Net works.
  2. How to register.
  3. Services that count towards the safety net.

Under the Medicare Safety Net Levy, you may be entitled to receive a benefit of up to 85%  of your out of pocket costs once you have reach Medicares Safety Net Levy, however some In Vitro Fertilisation items will be capped once the maximum level  of benefits have been received. Where the item has an EMSN rebate cap, such as In Vitro Fertilisation -related treatment, there is a maximum limit on the EMSN rebate that will be paid for that item.

“Out-of-pocket costs” (gap payment) refer to the difference between the Medicare rebate and the fee charged by the practitioner.

Medicare Safety Nets do not include hospital or day surgery related procedures, such as egg collection and embryo transfer.

The Medicare benefit is dependent on acceptable evidence that the service has been provided following referral from another practitioner.

Visitors To Australia

Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Italy, Malta and Belgium.

Visitors from these countries are entitled to medically necessary treatment while they are in Australia, comprising public hospital care (as public patients), Medicare benefits and drugs under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Visitors must enrol with Medicare Australia to receive benefits.

Visitors to Australia will not be entitled to access rebates and safety nets under the Medicare program for fertility treatment, however you can still access fertility treatments and services at Flinders Fertility.
